January - February
On January 1st, a previously unknown force, the EZLN (the Zapatista Army
of National Liberation) emerges in Southern Chiapas and takes control
of 6 towns in the eastern part of the state.
After massive international pressure and solidarity, a cease fire is called
on Jan 12th. It is proposed that a "dialogue will begin between the
federal government and the EZLN, with the purpose of finding a just and
dignified political outcome appropriate to the present conflict."

March - May
The communities consult about the outcome of the 'Dialogue for Peace and
Reconciliation in Chiapas'. The Mexican army is building up its forces.
June
The communities decide to reject the dialogue’s conclusions but
also decide not to go back to war.
August
The Zapatistas hold a national meeting for 'civil society' (individuals
and support groups) in a specially constructed centre in Guadalupe Tepeyac,
named “Aguascalientes.”
